Why I played Musa & three other strikers- Ranieri
Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri has explained why he played Nigeria’s Ahmed Musa and three other forwards in Saturday’s Premier League defeat against EPL newcomers Hull City.
A 57th minute winner by Robert Snodgrass ensured that the Nigerian’s Premier League debut with a defeat as he powered home a half-volley to hand Hull City a 2-1 win over the defending Champions. Musa who impressed during the game bagged 90 minutes of action.
Ranieri who has now urged Musa and his team-mates to use their strength in a post-match reaction said: “We equalised immediately from the start of the second half and when we went on the counter attack, we lost the ball on halfway and they scored again.
“I’m very pleased with the number of chances we created but of course I want to see a team. Our strength is as a team. Today we were better, harder, but not like a team.
“When I played with four strikers it was important to play with [Ahmed] Musa and Riyad [Mahrez] very wide. They wanted to score and they went very close.
“This season is harder. It’s harder but we must compete very well. Better than today with more attitude and motivation because that is our strength.” Ranieri told the Foxes’ official website.
Adama Diomande had given the hosts a 1-0 lead on the stroke of half-time and although Riyad Mahrez levelled from the penalty spot at the start of the second, Snodgrass rattled a shot into the corner to re-establish the Tigers’ lead, condemning Ranieri’s men to a first day defeat. Hull City were without their dependable full-back Moses Odubajo.
Musa and his troops will now turn their attention turn to their first home game of the 2016/17 campaign – a clash with Arsenal at King Power Stadium on Saturday 20 August.
