Manchester United reason for Schweinsteiger Europa League axe revealed

German midfielder will not take part in the group stages after being omitted from the squad list submitted to UEFA

Schweinsteiger has been banished to the U23s

Schweinsteiger will not play in the Europa League group stages this season.
Bastian Schweinsteiger has been omitted from Manchester United's Europa League squad because Jose Mourinho did not have room to include him.

The midfielder was left off the list submitted to UEFA and will not be eligible for games against Fenerbahce, Feyenoord and Zorya Luhansk in the group stages.

Under UEFA regulations , a club can only have 21 players who are not 'club-trained' in their 25-man squad. United have 22 non-club trained players on their books meaning one had to be left out.

To qualify as 'club-trained', a player must have spent three full seasons at Old Trafford between the ages of 15 and 21. Wayne Rooney and Jesse Lingard are the only two members of United's squad who meet the requirement,

Schweinsteiger has already been deemed surplus to requirements by Jose Mourinho and has been training with the reserves.

The 32-year-old has been named in United's Premier League squad but Mourinho has insisted it will be 'difficult' for the former Bayern Munich man to play for the club again.

Schweinsteiger has not played for United since March.

"My absolute dream would be to continue playing for Man Utd," said Schweinsteiger last week.
"I have no personal problems with Jose Mourinho. We had a good exchange, he explained his

standpoint to me. I know what Manchester United want. But I also know what I want.
“You will have to wait and see what happens in September, October. It’s respectful between both parties. I will certainly not stop playing football. I still believe in my own ability. I could still help Man United if given the chance."
